If you’re looking for the best place to paddle near Fresno, Millerton Lake is one of the top spots in the Central Valley. The lake offers wide open water, scenic foothills, beautiful sunsets and plenty of space for both beginners and experienced paddlers.
Best Launch Spot at Millerton Lake
One of the easiest launch areas is on the Madera side of the lake. After entering the park and passing the check-in booth, make a right and head down toward the sandy beach. This area offers easy water access and beautiful views of the surrounding foothills. It’s also one of the best places on the lake to watch the sunset.
✅ Local tip from Doxa Outdoors:
One of the biggest mistakes people make when visiting Millerton Lake in the summer is trying to paddleboard in the late morning or midday. Either you paddle early morning at 7 am or after 5 pm!
In the summer, temperatures around Fresno can reach 100–110°F, and by early afternoon many people are already tired, overheated, and dealing with sunburn.
Instead, a better approach is to plan your paddleboarding session later in the day.
Arrive around 5 PM, launch your paddleboard, and enjoy a relaxing evening on the water. You’ll avoid the scorching midday sun and experience some of the calmest and most beautiful conditions on the lake.
Many people assume the best time to paddle is early in the morning, but evenings can be even better. During the summer, the sun sets around 8:30 PM, giving you several hours of comfortable paddling after 4 PM.
A great local strategy is simple:
Stay indoors or take care of work during the hot part of the day
Head to Millerton Lake in the late afternoon
Paddle through the cooler evening hours
Finish your session with a beautiful sunset over the foothills
Sunset paddling is one of the most relaxing ways to experience Millerton Lake.
How to Set Up Your Inflatable Paddleboard
Setting up your inflatable paddleboard correctly helps protect your equipment and makes your day on the water smoother.
1. Unpack near your car- Lay out your paddleboard on cement in the parking lot rather than dirt or mud.
2. Store your carry bag in the car- Keep the bag clean and away from mud or water.
3. Check the valve position-Press the valve pin into the up position before inflating.
4. Inflate your board- Pump your paddleboard to 12–15 PSI for the best stability and performance.
5. Install the fin- Slide the fin into the track and lock it securely.
6. Protect the fin- Avoid standing or jumping on the board when the fin is attached while on the ground, as it can bend or break.
Paddleboarding Tips on the Water
Once you’re on the lake, balance and paddling technique make a big difference.
1. Position your feet- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, with your dominant foot slightly forward.
2. Look forward- Keep your head up and look where you’re going—similar to riding a bike. Avoid looking down at the board
3. Use long paddle strokes- Reach forward as far as you comfortably can and pull the paddle back toward your board for efficient movement.
Packing Up After Paddleboarding
Taking care of your paddleboard will help it last longer.
1. Dry the paddleboard while inflated- This removes most of the water easily.
2. Pack on cement or a table- Avoid muddy areas while packing.
3. Fold from the top- Start rolling from the nose of the board, wiping off dirt as you go.
4. Store the fin separately- Place the fin inside a dry bag.
5. Pack the board first- Put the paddleboard in the bag first, then add accessories.
